Brady Allum scored his first career Must See Racing Sprint Car Series victory on Saturday night at Owosso Speedway, holding off Bobby Santos, III to earn the checkered flag in his fourth start with the series.
Allum started on the pole and led all 30 laps of the feature event at Owosso. While Allum was the dominant driver of the evening, the Taylorsville, North Carolina native had to hold off a 15-time Must See Racing winner in the closing laps.
Originally, Allum didn't even intend to run Saturday's race at Owosso. With the 500 Sprint Car Tour event at Jennerstown Speedway postponed, Allum instead headed to Owosso, making just his fifth Winged Sprint Car start in his career.
That decision proved to be a worthwhile one, leading to a trip to victory lane.
"You couldn't define a more weekend up-and-down roller coaster than this was," said Allum. "We came here, it was really fast. We were supposed to be running in Pennsylvania this weekend with the non-wings. When that got cancelled, we said, hey, let's weld some posts on and run some wing races, and here we are.
"We came out here, with my last running with the Wing stuff, we did pretty good. We wanted to try it again. This is only my fifth race ever in a wing car, so this is pretty amazing right now."
Allum had his hands full fending off Santos in the closing laps, and even said he may have been every bit lucky as good on some late-race restarts.
"I knew somebody was behind me and I knew that every time we had a restart that I don't have enough motor to beat a lot of these guys down the straightaway. I knew every single restart we had was putting me in trouble. I just got lucky as crap on every single one of them and was able to beat out the other car."
It was a familiar scene for Santos, who battled Kody Swanson for a win one year ago with Must See Racing at Owosso. This time, however, Santos settled for second behind the first-time winner.
"Definitely didn't like the yellows, but that's part of it," Santos said. "I've just got to thank Dick, my whole DJ Racing team. Everyone did a great job today, worked hard. Congratulations to Brady, those guys did a good job today. They had a fast race car. We got second place today.
"The lapped traffic obviously came into play. A couple more laps with an open race track, maybe we could have put a little more pressure on him. Catching them and passing them, obviously two different things."
Jimmy McCune had an up-and-down night of his own with a third-place finish. While it was a successful evening on track for him, it came with a scare after his son, Jimmy McCune, Jr., faced an early exit from the race after his car caught on fire entering turn one.
"I didn't see it," said the elder McCune. |I just heard it when I stopped. Of course, it's a major concern. I've been on fire once, so, you know, to see my kid out there, it's not so nice. Luckily, he pulled the fire extinguisher and everything's fine. Looks like we tore up a bunch of stuff.
"All in all for us with the yellow 88, it's just nice to be back on the frontstretch at the end of one of these nights. We've struggled the last season and a half. Finally figured out what was wrong with the race car, so now we're just getting back to some old notes and making the car right for the way it used to be."
Ryan Litt finished fourth, with Kevin Mingus rounding out the top five.
The next race for the Must See Racing Sprint Car Series takes the Winged Warriors north of the border to Ontario's Delaware Speedway. The $10,000-to-win event is scheduled for Friday, August 7.
