Instant Classic (Go for Broke 150)
Trevor Berry took home a $10,500 payday on Saturday night, winning the first-ever Go for Broke 150 at Owosso Speedway.
Berry held off Aaron Taylor in the closing laps to score the win in the marquee event for Open-Wheel Modifieds at the Michigan facility. After battling through one of two 50-lap qualifying races and the 50-lap feature, Berry stood tall in victory lane.
"It was a hot day, long night, long couple of days," said Berry after the win. "We definitely put a feature on the car Friday. We turned the most laps in practice, I think, 75. We still weren't happy. We went home, did some thinking with our car builder."
The past year have been about scoring major Modified wins for Berry. He earned his first win in the Run for the Gun 50 at Winchester Speedway last October, and is now the inaugural winner in the Go for Broke 150.
"Been trying to win a crown jewel, a big one," said Berry. |I got one at Winchester, and I just struggle here, man. It feels really good to get this. I've been chasing some sort of ring for a long time, since I was nine years old. To get one, it's unbelievable."
Berry took the lead from Brad Springer on lap 15 and maintained the top spot for the remained of the race. It was not without its challenges, specifically from 2024 Hot Shoe 100 winner Aaron Taylor.
Berry acknowledged he raced Taylor hard - maybe a little too hard - but with everything at stake in Saturday's race, he was willing to put it all on the line.
"Aaron Taylor, man, he's just badass here, right? He ran me clean. I probably crowded him a little too much there. I feel bad for that, but I really wanted to win one of these. It's not the Go for Broke for nothing, right? We were either going to win or wreck trying."
For Taylor's part, there were no hard feelings about the late-race intensity. Instead, he offered his most sincere congratulations to Berry.
"There's no one else I'd rather lose to than Trevor," said Taylor. |He's a great guy, great racer. Fast guy, my gosh, there's nobody that can carry speed like that guy. The fact that we're running up front with him, Dennis, his old man's a legend himself. I couldn't be more proud to run second to him."
David McManus was two-for-two in Modified competition at Owosso entering Saturday night. While he was in contention for a third-straight win, he instead settled for a third-place finish.
"It was tough," McManus said. |That first half of the race, I couldn't catch a break. That's just the nature of it. Sometimes they go like this, and sometimes they go like the one previous. I can't be mad about it.
"We had a good night, third-place here. The first race we haven't won this year, so it's been incredible, man. I can't be mad. Of course, I would have liked to win, or even come second, but we'll take it."
Buddy Gray finished fourth, with Luke Warhurst rounding out the top five.
