Crossroads With the Burtons
Jake Sheridan earned his fifth career APC United Late Model Series win on Saturday night, taking the checkered flag in the Grisdale 100 at Flamboro Speedway.
Methodically working his way through the field, Sheridan passed Brandon Watson for the lead on lap 80 of the 100-lap contest. From there, he stretched out a three-second lead in the closing laps to score the victory.
While Sheridan's climb from fourth after the opening lap to the top spot may have appeared to be a display of patience, he said that he was giving his all for the entirety of the second race of the APC season.
"I find it really funny, a lot of people like to discuss, even you guys always discuss, if you're saving," said Sheridan in victory lane. "You've got to drive so hard every lap, it's just not the case anymore. Everybody's car is so good, everybody's so good.
"We fired off really free, and I figured that was going to pay dividends for us. It was planned a little bit. This thing tightened up just sweet, honestly, to the point, too much at the end. That just worked out for us, the timing."
Sheridan finished second in the season opener at Delaware Speedway, but it was a trying weekend as the team battled various challenges and obstacles. He was pleased to have a much smoother weekend at Flamboro.
"I can't thank these guys enough, man. We had a rough day in Delaware. We didn't really, you know, we finished second, but we were struggling with some other things going on. I can't thank these guys enough."
Behind Sheridan, a fierce battle brewed for the second position. Junior Farrelly prevailed over Shawn Chenoweth for the spot, but they shared a conversation after the physical battle.
"I just thanked him for not dumping me, basically," said Farrelly. "We probably deserved to get dumped. We normally run each other really, really clean. We had some stuff a few years ago, and we apologized, and we ran super clean. I don't like running that way. Sometimes, it just gets over you. I chose what I chose and did what I did, but I wouldn't do it again, that's for sure.
"He said that, but it is what it is," Chenoweth responded. "Those guys are racing for points, racing all year long, and I'm not. I was hoping for a little more respect than that. I think I show it to these guys. I got into Brandon [Watson] there, and I left off instead of getting into his door. I would have done the same for Junior.
"I mean, we had an excellent car. I think we were on par with the 52, really, on a long run. I couldn't get them on the outside, that's why I didn't take it on the last restart. I thought we would get run cleaner than we did, but I've got a checkered past, too. I may have done Junior wrong sometime in life, and I think he got the better of me tonight. I think we're at an understanding that the give-and-take's not going to happen anymore. Next time I'm in there, I'm just going to leave it in there."
Shae Gemmell finished fourth, with Dale Shaw rounding out the top five. After leading 60 laps, Brandon Watson recovered from a spin to finish sixth.
With Saturday's victory, all five of Sheridan's APC United Late Model Series wins have come at five different tracks. His first career win came at Sauble Speedway in 2021, followed by a win at Delaware in 2023. Last year, Sheridan scored victories at Peterborough Speedway and Sunset Speedway.
Peterborough plays host for the next stop on the APC United Late Model Series schedule. The series heads to Peterborough on June 13.
