The Coca-Cola 600 is a special race due to a variety of reasons. It is a crown jewel event in the NASCAR Cup Series, and the 400-lap race around the Charlotte Motor Speedway serves as the longest race on the schedule. But another special thing about the Coca-Cola 600 is the 600 Miles of Remembrance program.
Every team will have a fallen service member riding along with them as the soldier's name will be featured on the windshield of their race car.
On Tuesday, Ally, Alex Bowman, and the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team unveiled their special patriotic paint scheme for the event, and announced that they will honor Army Captain Arthur "Bo" Felder this weekend.
Felder gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country as he passed away on April 24, 2004 while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The man, who was known as a gentle giant, stood 6'4" tall and weighed 290 lbs. Felder was assigned to the 39th Support Battalion 39th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Army National Guard from Hazen, AR.
The Army Capt. was killed when mortar rounds hit his camp in Taji, Iraq. Capt. Felder's family have served in the military since World War I, and Felder joined the Army himself in the Summer of his junior year of High School.
This weekend, Bowman, and the No. 48 team will look to give Felder and his family a victory lap at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The car itself is beautiful. The car has a navy blue base coat, and as any patriotic scheme should, it features red, and white throughout the paint scheme.
A lot of the same things that make Ally's primary purple paint scheme special are on display in this patriotic paint scheme, as their are subtle designs within the Navy Blue sections of the car.
On the hood of the race car, the iconic Ally "a" branding mark is filled with an american flag design, and hanging from the top of the logo is a set of dog tags.
One of the dog tags has the Ally logo, the other dog tag features the name of Army Capt. Felder.
It's a truly special paint scheme, and it will look great under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday night in the Coca-Cola 600.
