Kaden Honeycutt survived a chaotic night of racing to win the Hunt for the Bear 62 for the Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Modifieds of Mayhem Tour powered by Chevrolet Performance at Montgomery Motor Speedway Saturday night.
Honeycutt took the lead on lap 24 of the 62-lap contest, putting him ahead of trouble as several late-race incidents took out his closest competitors.
First, it was Jeremy Williams and Derrick Griffin coming together with 15 laps to go while battling for second. On the restart, Jeff Letson and Tim Moore touched wheels and slid into the outside wall in turn one.
After that, a multi-car pileup collected several cars and ended the night for Jared Maupin. In the end, only four cars finished on the lead lap, with Honeycutt crossing the line ahead of Kevin Peel and Moore.
“I just want to thank John [Heil], BMF Race Cars, everyone that supports our deal, man,” said Honeycutt in victory lane. “They’ve done a great job. Thanks to all my crew, they did a great job all weekend. It was a hot one, but yeah, we’ve been really good with this thing. I just want to thank John for the privilege of driving, man.”
It continues a hot start for Honeycutt, who won two Florida Modified features in the No. 30 during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway. Augie Grill also took the No. 30 to victory lane during the Speedweeks festivities at New Smyrna.
“I know Augie would love to drive this thing. I was really happy for him to be able to race at New Smyrna and get a win there and get him back in the race car.”
Kevin Peel battled to a second-place finish while trying to steer clear of the chaos that unfolded in the final 15 laps.
“We worked on this thing all week and got it a lot better,” said Peel. “I think I would have been better if we had just went green. The car worked better, and then I about spun it out being stupid, trying to get in the gas a little bit too hard coming off turn four."
Tim Moore finished third, overcoming adversity on an emotional evening for him and his team.
“Someone was looking over me tonight. I lost my dad a week and a half ago. This one’s for him. He’s been to every race except a couple of them in my 30 years of racing. It’s just not the same. We’re racing for him, and he’s looking out for me, I guess.
“After that first wreck, I thought we were done, and the guys were like, no, everything’s straight. I came in, and they checked everything over. Then we went back out. I don’t know what happened coming off turn two, but they all stacked up, and I tried to miss it and got involved in it.”
The Modifieds of Mayhem Tour returns to Montgomery Motor Speedway on April 18 as part of the Rumble by the River. The ASA Southern Super Series headlines the card that evening, with Street Stocks and Crown Stocks also in action.
