Crossroads With the Burtons
It was a perfect homecoming for Connor Hall on Saturday night at Larry King Law's Langley Speedway.
The former track champion at Langley has not been as active in the Late Model Stock world in 2026 after taking on a part-time role in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Niece Motorsports. However, Hall proved he's still up to the task in the zMAX CARS Late Model Stock Tour, holding off Niece teammate Landen Lewis for the win in the Visit Hampton Virginia 125.
“I’m tired of all these young kids in the race shop at Niece calling me Unc,” said Hall in victory lane. “I had to come show them Unc’s still got it a bit. I race with such a great group of guys. To be teammates with Landen [Lewis] and Parker [Eatmon] and a bunch of these other guys out here. To be able to come out on off weekends and play together, it’s super fun.
"Obviously, I want to beat [Landen], but in some respect, it's really cool to line up side-by-side with him, because I really hope to be teammates with him full-time next year or something, or any time in the Truck Series."
Hall has plenty of fans and detractors any time he returns to his home track of Langley, where there have been many fierce battles with Brenden "Butterbean" Queen over the years. He looks forward to competing against Queen in front of those fans later this year in Langley's crown jewel event, the Hampton Heat.
“It’s like anything in life, you’re always going to have people that doubt you and you have people who support other drivers, it is what it is,” Hall said. “You’re going to see it at the [Hampton] Heat, whether you're a Butterbean fan, there's plenty out here. I understand. It’s part of the rivalry and that's what makes short track racing great.
“I think people are starting to realize I’m just a good old boy who wants to do some CARS [Tour] racing. I just want to win races and drink a little beer after.”
Lewis led during the early stages of Saturday's race before turning over the top spot to Hall. While several late restarts offered Lewis the chance to regain the lead and fight for the win, he didn't want to cross the line with his Truck Series compatriot.
“At the end of the day, I didn’t want to be that guy to wreck [Hall],” Lewis said. “I’m starting to mature at my old age where I’m tired of fixing race cars."
Caden Kvapil added to his zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car points lead with a third-place finish. After qualifying 15th, Kvapil drove up to the podium, continuing the trend of his 2026 season.
Saturday's race marks the fourth time this season that Kvapil finished on the podium after qualifying outside the top 10. That pattern began in the season opener at Southern National Motorsports Park, where he qualified 29th and charged to the win.
“All night, we just kind of struggled with the car,” Kvapil said. “We got up to the top five and were really content with where we were at. That last long run, I thought we were going to go to the checkered and I was going to be fine with it, so I was a little nervous on the restart. A lot of chaos at the end, and luckily, we were able to stay out of it for the most part.
“We had good restarts at the end. We were able to stay with the front two, but I think they were in a class of their own for the whole night. The car really came to life the last two or so restarts. It was kind of weird, because me and the 77 [of Treyten Lapcevich] made contact on the frontstretch and bent the front steering really bad, and all of a sudden, it was better. Definitely not the night we were looking for. Obviously, a third’s not bad. I’m a little disappointed, but I guess it’s good to be mad at third.”
Carson Brown finished fourth, with Lapcevich rounding out the top five.
