Strong Field Headlines Second Annual Tom Bigelow Showdown at Winchester Speedway
Jun 23, 2026
Road to Glory - Episode Five
The yourBIGplans.com 500 Sprint Car Tour heads to Winchester Speedway for the second points paying race of the season. There is no shortage of storylines as the tour enters the Tom Bigelow Showdown presented by Neal Metal Recycling and Processing.
Tom Bigelow is more than a Racing Hero
In honor of the man they call the “Mouse”, the yourBIGplans.com 500 Sprint Car Tour returns to the second home of racing legend, Tom Bigelow, for the second consecutive year. Playing a major role in the return of non wing pavement sprint cars to the high banks of Winchester Speedway, Bigelow was honored by the track and series with the naming of the yearly event. Since his retirement from racing, Bigelow and his wife, Judy, have resided in Winchester, Indiana and remained a prominent fixture in Midwest Short Track Racing. A multiple time inductee to various Hall of Fames, Bigelow has been the beating heart of pavement sprint car and pavement midget racing. He asked for non-wing sprint cars to return to Winchester, and he got it. Now, they are back for a second consecutive year.
Swanson is on Fire
Even after admitting he has started to slow down the driving side of his career while taking on the role of director of the USAC Silver Crown Series, Kody Swanson continues to perform at an elite level. In 2026, the veteran put together one of the most impressive seasons of his storied career. Swanson opened the year by dominating the Glen Niebel Classic at Anderson Speedway, leading every lap of the 500 Sprint Car Tour season opener. He then added another major victory by capturing the 78th Annual Unified Group Services Little 500, his fourth career triumph in the prestigious event.
Swanson's winning ways continued with a Race for the Million victory, proving he remains one of pavement sprint car racing's premier talents. While his responsibilities off the track continue to grow, the results on the track show that Kody Swanson is still setting the standard for excellence in 2026. He now returns to Winchester Speedway for the Tom Bigelow Showdown as the defending race winner, looking to add another prestigious victory to an already remarkable season.
Chase Cabre makes first 500 Sprint Car Tour Start with AP Driver Development
Chase Cabre will make his first non-wing sprint car start this weekend with the AP Driver Development program. While his experience in winged sprint cars has been limited, he has already shown flashes of strong pace in each opportunity. Cabre turned heads earlier this season by qualifying on the pole for the Race for the Million event at Owosso Speedway. He also impressed many in the Open Wheel Showdown last November, consistently running competitive laps against seasoned veterans. The transition to non-wing machinery marks a new challenge, but one he appears well-prepared for based on early results. All eyes will be on Cabre at Winchester Speedway to see how quickly he adapts to one of pavement racing’s toughest disciplines.
Armstrong bringing new car to Winchester Speedway
Dakoda Armstrong enters Winchester Speedway carrying plenty of momentum after a strong 2025 season. This weekend, Armstrong will debut a sprint car his team built during the offseason specifically for winged competition. Last year, Armstrong competed in the two half-mile events at Winchester and Salem driving the No. 7C owned by Randy Neal. He turned in an impressive performance, finishing third at Winchester before scoring a victory at Salem Speedway later in the season. That car driven by Justin Grant suffered heavy damage during the Little 500, prompting the team to focus its efforts on the new car for the Winchester event. With a proven record on Indiana's high-banked half miles, Armstrong will be among the favorites when the green flag drops on the Tom Bigelow Showdown.
Hamilton Jr. is back and looking for Redemption
Davey Hamilton Jr. returns to Winchester Speedway looking to put the disappointment of 2025 behind him. In last year’s event, Hamilton Jr. set the pace early by winning the pole and leading the first 18 laps of the race. His strong run came to an abrupt end when an oil leak forced him to retire from a dominant position. The early exit left him frustrated after showing winning speed on the high banks of Winchester. Now, he comes back with unfinished business and renewed focus for the Tom Bigelow Showdown. Hamilton Jr. will be making his second non-wing start after a strong runner-up finish at the Little 500, giving him added confidence heading into the weekend.
Byrdman back in the Saddle
Nathan Byrd, along with Myers Auto Research, will be making their season debut with the yourBIGplans.com 500 Sprint Car Tour. Byrd, a co-owner in the series’ Entitlement Sponsor, will carry the yourBIGplans.com banner on his car for this event and the remainder of the 2026 season. Partnering with his twin brother, Noah, the Byrd Brothers launched the yourBIGplans.com to level the playing field, using data, strategy, and a fundamentally different approach to insurance benefits.
Nathan Byrd has been a fixture on the 500 Sprint Car Tour entry lists for the past two seasons. The Goodyear, Arizona native has made 16 starts with the 500 Sprint Car Tour, including a total of 15 starts since the start of the 2024 racing season. He has a best finish of 5th place twice in his 500 Sprint Car Tour career, coming in consecutive events in 2025. The first came at Winchester Speedway in the Inaugural Tom Bigelow Showdown. Byrd will be looking to replicate that pace as he returns to the track, and the series, for the first time in 2026.
