Tyler Reddick continued his winning ways on Sunday at EchoPark Speedway, missing fender and all.
Reddick won the NASCAR Cup Series Autotrader 400 on Sunday, backing up his victory in the season-opening Daytona 500 one week ago. Once again, a late-race restart shone upon Reddick, taking the lead approaching the white flag in a second overtime attempt to score the victory.
Unlike last week at Daytona, Reddick led much more than one lap. The No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota paced the field for 53 out of 271 laps, more than any other competitor in the field. However, an incident on lap 225 nearly derailed Reddick's bid.
The lap 225 incident started with contact between Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, and collected multiple cars on the frontstretch of the 1.54-mile speedway. Reddick returned to the race following the incident, albeit without a right-front fender on his car.
In spite of that, Reddick lined up behind his 23XI Racing teammate Bubba Wallace on the final restart, pushing Wallace's No. 23 to the lead. When Wallace moved to the high lane, Reddick surged to the lead and claimed the victory.
"That's crazy, isn't it? How about that, EchoPark Speedway?" said Reddick. "This place over the years, it just puts on some amazing racing. Handling matters here, but I don't know. I guess determination outweighs handling.
"I really didn't know. We were back there in 30th after we got collected with the 11. It was definitely really loose, and we were able to make a little bit of adjustment on it with the aero and whatnot. They just kept stacking up in the middle and top lanes. I just a found a way to get back into the top five.
"I tried to stay committed to somebody. I didn't really have a choice, I had to find out if it was going to go in clean air like that."
The win is Reddick's 10th in his NASCAR Cup Series career. All 10 victories have taken place at 10 different tracks on the Cup Series circuit. Reddick is also the sixth driver in series history to win the first two races of a season, the first since Matt Kenseth in 2009.
Chase Briscoe finished second, giving Toyota a 1-2 finish ahead of Ross Chastain's Chevrolet in third. Briscoe was happy to be in position for the win late in the race, but could not muster a final-lap charge.
"I felt like I was doing everything that I could," said Briscoe. "Even all the situations that happened, like, everything kind of worked out in my favor. I just couldn’t ever get a big enough run down the straightaway to do anything with our Bass Pro Shops TRACKER Toyota.
"Yeah, I was able to obviously push the 45 to the win. Wish I would have been able to have a bigger run to take it three wide and take the lead, but I just couldn’t do it, for whatever reason."
Wallace fell to eighth in the final running order, shuffled out of the line of Toyotas on the final overtime restart. He was happy to see his teammate return to victory lane and to leave Atlanta with a strong finish.
"I'm just pumped Toyota still got to victory lane," said Wallace. "I need to go back and see. I didn't think I moved up that much to put myself on top of three [wide]. Unfortunate, but, man, what a race car we had today. You know who I learned a lot from? Rajah [Caruth] yesterday. He had a bad, fast car and he finished second in the first stage and won the second stage, just like me.
"I was like, this car is so fast, don't do anything to jeopardize your finish. I hate that we didn't get the win, but all in all, I appreciate Xfinity. Man, what could have been. Go on to COTA, pray for me there, we'll have some fun."
Hocevar, seeking his first NASCAR Cup Series win after nearly winning in this event one year ago, was once again in contention. However, the first attempt at overtime saw Christopher Bell crash into the outside wall after contact with Hocevar. On the second attempt, Hocevar fell to fourth in the final rundown.
"Yeah, just happy with the Spectrum car," Hocevar said. "Our car is really fast to go from two laps down to get Stage Points and then finish fourth, that's good points for us. Yeah, I mean, I was taking every run. I don't know, I'm sure I owe people apologies."
Next up for the NASCAR Cup Series is the DuraMax Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas on Sunday, March 1. The race will be televised on FOX, with television coverage starting at 3:30 PM ET. The Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will provide the radio broadcast of the race.
