Race Results: NASCAR Cup Series Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma
Jul 13, 2025
Another road course race, another victory for Shane van Gisbergen on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.
The New Zealand native led 97 of 110 laps in Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 for his third consecutive road course victory in the NASCAR Cup Series. Just like at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and the Chicago Street Course, van Gisbergen won from the pole for his third victory of the 2025 season.
A string of late cautions threatened van Gisbergen's shot at the victory, but he held off Chase Briscoe on restart after restart to secure the victory.
"We had an amazing car," said van Gisbergen. "Chase Briscoe, what a great racer and gave me respect. Jumped the last one a little bit and it was pretty tense, but amazing. So stoked for Red Bull, Trackhouse, Chevy. I believe we had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that."
Despite sitting 26th in the NASCAR Cup Series points standings in his first full-time NASCAR Cup Series season, van Gisbergen is now one of four drivers with multiple wins in 2025, joining Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson.
Now, he hopes this string of success can build momentum and translate to the ovals of the series with the Playoffs looming.
"I just have to thank these guys," van Gisbergen said. "We built up all year, got better and better, and now we need to keep getting better on the ovals and start proving some people wrong."
Briscoe finished second, likening trying to race against van Gisbergen on the road courses to playing basketball against Michael Jordan.
"Obviously, I never played basketball against Michael Jordan in his prime, but I feel like that's what it was probably like," said Briscoe. "That guy's just unbelievable on road courses. He's just so good. He has really raised the bar in this entire series.
"I thought there was one I was maybe going to get clear of him, but I mean, truthfully, even if I clear him, he's probably going to pass me back by the end of the lap. We were a second-place car all day and ended up second with it.
"Honestly, I don't know what more I need. I feel like my car is extremely, extremely good and every time I'm kind of running down Shane, he'd just pick up the pace himself and start driving back away. It was frustrating at times, but I was happy with the effort. This is honestly my worst racetrack, so I kind of surprised myself, truthfully."
Chase Elliott finished third, followed by Michael McDowell and Bell.
With Sunday's race, the semifinals are set for the NASCAR In-Season Challenge. Ty Dillon passed Alex Bowman on the final lap to win their matchup. He will face John Hunter Nemechek, who eliminated LEGACY MOTOR CLUB teammate Erik Jones.
On the other side of the bracket, a sixth-place finish for Tyler Reddick advanced him past Ryan Preece. He'll face fellow Toyota driver Ty Gibbs, who finished seventh to eliminate Zane Smith.
The next stop for the NASCAR Cup Series is the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Dover Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 20. The green flag waves at 2 p.m. ET, with coverage on TNT, the Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
