Shane van Gisbergen secured his fifth consecutive NASCAR Cup Series road course win, while a dramatic battle for the cutoff into the Round of 8 for the Playoffs played out behind him.
Managing his tires and strategy, Van Gisbergen crossed the finish line more than 15 seconds ahead of Kyle Larson for another road course victory. The New Zealand native is now just one road course win away from tying the record for most wins in succession on the road courses, held by Jeff Gordon.
The win also came after his first oval top-10 finish in the NASCAR Cup Series, as Van Gisbergen finished 10th at Kansas Speedway.
Larson finished second, followed by Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher and Michael McDowell.
Meanwhile, Joey Logano advanced to the Round of 8 ahead of Ross Chastain, unofficially knocking out Chastain by four points. A pair of pit road miscues, including a speeding penalty on the final green-flag stop, put Chastain on the hunt during the final stage of the race.
Chastain entered the final lap one lap to the good, but under duress from Denny Hamlin, who made a pass for 18th in the hairpin turn seven. Chastain attempted to reclaim the spot in the final corners, making contact which sent both drivers spinning.
Logano crossed the finish line 20th, just ahead of Chastain backing across the line in 21st following his incident with Hamlin.
The eight drivers moving on in the Playoffs include Round of 12 winners Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott, as well as Larson, Bell, William Byron, Hamlin, Chase Briscoe and Logano.
After crossing the line in 30th, Riley Herbst was disqualified for a post-race weight violation in technical inspection.
The Round of 8 begins next Sunday, October 12 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the South Point Casino 400. Coverage of the event begins at 5:30 p.m. ET on USA Network, the Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
