Points Report: NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington

Kyle Larson has locked himself into the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Playoffs, while other contenders struggled in Sunday's Playoff opener at Darlington Raceway.

Thanks to a fourth-place finish William Byron was able to narrowly hang on to his lead in the NASCAR Cup Series driver point standings after the opening race of the NASCAR Playoffs.

Byron's Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson officially locked himself into the second round of the Playoffs with his statement victory Sunday at Darlington, but he trails Byron by one point in the official standings.

With a runner-up finish to Larson, 23XI Racing's Tyler Reddick jumped to third in the point standings, just 15 marks behind Byron.

As the series heads to Kansas Speedway for the second race of the opening round, the four drivers at the bottom of the top 16 in standings are Bubba Wallace, Kevin Harvick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Michael McDowell.

The NASCAR Cup Series owner point standings closely resemble the driver point standings following Sunday's Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington, with the exception of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports team.

While Chase Elliott is not in contention for the driver championship, the No. 9 team moved up to 11th in the owner standings thanks to an eighth-place finish at Darlington.
