Elliott's Last-Lap Pass Leads to Special Home State Win at EchoPark Speedway
Jun 29, 2025
Richie Smith completed the Gulf Coast Doubleheader sweep for the Modifieds of Mayhem Tour on Saturday night, leading every lap for the victory at Mobile International Speedway.
On Friday night, Smith finished ahead of Jared Maupin and Timothy Moore at Five Flags Speedway to start the doubleheader weekend.
“I don’t know how many more years I can drive them,” said Smith after his Five Flags win. “I have to take advantage of these years, for sure.”
At the very least, Smith took advantage of the very next night. The veteran Florida racer crossed the finish line ahead of Bubba VanDevender and Steven Davis for his second win of the weekend.
With the sweep, Smith also secured the $500 bonus from Theodore Recycling for the best average finish across the Gulf Coast doubleheader for the Modifieds of Mayhem.
“We’ve got to thank those guys for stepping up and doing that for the series," said Smith about the bonus. "It’s a good series. I like running it when I can. It’s always nice to see a bunch of cars when you race in it.”
Bubba VanDevender finished second to Smith, bouncing back from a 14th-place result at Five Flags to end the weekend on a high note at one of his favorite race tracks.
“Coming to this place all the time, it’s one of my favorite race tracks," said VanDevender. "I can’t thank my crew enough. Normally, it’s just me, my dad, my mom, my girlfriend, my uncles, my aunts.”
“We wouldn’t be here tonight if it weren’t for the whole crew, here and Five Flags. I can’t thank them enough, and thanks to everyone for coming out.”
Alabama veteran Steven Davis has raced a little bit of everything in his career, and added a pair of starts in the Modifieds of Mayhem this weekend. After finishing fourth at Five Flags, Davis added a third-place finish in Mobile's Modifieds of Mayhem event before taking the win in Pro Trucks feature.
“Obviosusly, we don’t like finishing third, but we’ll go work on it,” said Davis. “It’s definitely more horsepower than I’ve got in the Trucks. I enjoyed it. We’ve got a ways to go.”
Brad Stell finished fourth on Saturday, with Ryan Price rounding out the top five.
The Modifieds of Mayhem Tour heads to Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway on Saturday, July 12 for the Nashvegas 50. That is the lone scheduled appearance for the series in the Music City for 2025.
