Anticipation and History Collide at New Smyrna NWMT Showdown

Matt Hirschman set fast time in the final practice session for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at New Smyrna Speedway ahead of their 200-lap contest Saturday night.
Hirschman clocked in at 17.611 seconds around the Florida half-mile, as he'll look to repeat his victory in this event one year ago.
“I think the car is what I feel I need right now. I just don’t know where everybody else will be," said Hirschman. "It’s what I think we’ll need right now, but someone else may end up with something better.”
With 200 laps to determine the winner, Hirschman believes it will take more than a fast car to claim the checkered flag in the tour's second-ever visit to New Smyrna Speedway.
“There’s a lot of strategy involved with the cautions and the amount of change tires. There’s no one set strategy for pit window that I think everyone’s going to follow. I think there will be quite a variety and that always makes it interesting.
“It’s not always the fastest or best car ends up winning in a race like that. We’ll just have to try and hopefully put ourselves in a good position and see what we’ve got.”
Austin Beers was second in the final round of practice, followed by Tommy Catalano. Catalano set quick time in the first of the two Saturday practice sessions.
The green flag is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. ET at New Smyrna Speedway. Saturday's racing card also includes Pro Late Models, Sportsmen, Bomber A and Florida Modifieds.
