Kyle Steckly is now a 10-time race winner on the APC United Late Model Series, as he took the checkered flag in dominant fashion in Saturday's London Recreational Racing 100 at Flamboro Speedway.
Steckly took the lead from Cole Quinton on lap 32 and led the rest of the 100-lap distance for his second APC victory of the year. It is also his fifth APC win at Flamboro, the site of his first career victory with the series back in 2021.
It was a warm afternoon and evening of racing at the 1/3-mile track located near Hamilton, Ontario, but Steckly was up to the task and the conditions on Saturday.
"It's definitely a hot one," said Steckly in victory lane. "I mean, it was hot all day today, and that was the workout alone. Luckily, I had a really good Port City Race Car that was hooked up all night long. We just rode there the first 15. Cole started to just fall back ever so slightly and I got by him."
At one point, Steckly was surprisingly hoping for a caution in spite of his advantage, believing a heat cycle would help the handling of his No. 22. However, the caution-free race played out in Steckly's favor all the same.
"I was honestly pretty loose," explained Steckly. "I thought, you know, it'd be nice to get a caution and warm up the tires and get a heat cycle on them and hopefully tighten me up. It just worked out that the car tightened up on its own and we were able to stay ahead of them."
Runner-up finisher Jake Sheridan certainly hoped for a caution, and couldn't help but laugh at the notion Steckly would have needed one on Saturday night.
"I'm not sure why he needed it," said Sheridan. "He was gone. I think I just needed that little heat cycle on the tires. I think that could have been beneficial, truthfully. He had a good car. We just struggled a little bit with rotating all day. We got it the best we could. We had good drive off, and that could have been crucial for a late race restart.
Connor Pritiko rounded out the podium after Sheridan passed him for second with 21 laps to go. The hot temperatures were starting to have an impact on Pritiko's machine, but he was glad to not have to spend any extra time in the race car.
"We had a really fast car there," said Pritiko. "We just weren't Kyle Steckly fast. I was saving there, got around Cole with 80 to go, 70 to go. I was just kind of cruising and the car just started to get a little bit too tight, a little bit too tight. Motor was hot, brakes were hot, but when you run 100 laps here, that's what's going to happen.
"It was nice to go start to finish. I do wish we had a yellow. It would have been nice to see what would have happened with the lance picks and whatnot. You know, it was a good run."
Josh Stade finished fourth, with Dale Shaw rounding out the top five.
Saturday, August 2 is the next date on the APC United Late Model calendar. The series heads to Sauble Speedway on the first Saturday in August for its next event.
