Patience paid off for Joey Doiron on Sunday, as the Maine driver won the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model 150 at Star Speedway.
Doiron started 11th in the field of 17 drivers for the 150-lap Super Late Model event, but needed less than 30 laps to find the lead. From there, Doiron was untouchable, nursing a fender rub to a 2.5 second victory over D.J. Shaw
"I guess I got a little bit more damage back here than I thought I did," said Doiron. "What an unreal car. We came here and tested probably a month ago. We just haven't been able to race. It's a brand-new car. It's the first ever brand-new car I've ever had. "I can't thank Peter Petit, my parents, my wife, she puts up with a lot."
Like so many others in the field and the region, Doiron had been patiently waiting to put that new car to work. However, weather has been very uncooperative in the Northeast thus far in 2025, postponing several events.
Finally, Doiron took the track in the new steed in Sunday's race at the Epping, New Hampshire bullring, and it paid off with a trip to victory lane.
"I've set this car up four times, and we hadn't hit the track yet. It all worked out," said Doiron.
"Just unreal. Good way to start the year with a new car. I'm looking forward to getting to Oxford here soon."
D.J. Shaw finished second, giving him two top-five finishes in the first two points-paying PASS events of the year following a fifth-place effort in the Northeast Classic at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was not an easy afternoon for Shaw, but it paid off with a strong result.
"Just a solid day," said Shaw. "We battled through some adversity there. Reset on lap 38 and started coming to the front. Nothing for the 73 [of Doiron] today, but all and all, just can't complain about the rebound we had from the start of the race. The team never gave up. They kept loosening me up and we ended up on the podium."
All three steps on the podium were occupied by drivers doing double-duty on Sunday, competing with both PASS and the Milton CAT American-Canadian Tour. Jimmy Renfrew, Jr. rounded out the podium with a third-place result.
"I can't thank everybody that worked on this car and my ACT car enough today," said Renfrew. "They worked real hard on both of these things and we've got one more shot at it.
"I knew Joey would be tough. He's won every race around here. He's probably one of the best ones in the country right now. We've got some work to do to keep up with tehse two, but like DJ said, Dale Shaw Race Cars 1-2-3. We'll keep working on it."
Brandon Barker finished fourth, with Brandon Varney rounding out the top five.
The PASS Super Late Models return to action on Sunday, May 18 at another New Hampshire facility, White Mountain Motorsports Park. The New England Supermodified Series, PASS Modifieds, and NELCAR Legends and Bandoleros will also be part of next Sunday's show.
