For the first time in nine editions of the event, the Leonard Evans Memorial 150 goes to a member of the Evans family.

Jan Evans, son of Garrett Evans, earned his first career Northwest Super Late Model Series victory on Saturday night at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval. And what better way to do it than in the race bearing his grandfather’s name?

Evans took the lead with 26 laps to go, inheriting the top spot after contact between leader Kasey Kleyn and Haeden Plybon. Kleyn charged back through the field for a runner-up finish, but Evans took the win by more than three seconds ahead of Kleyn.

The Evans family has now won the first two races of the Northwest Super Late Model Series season. Garrett Evans won the Apple Cup 125 at Tri-City Raceway RMEC to start the season.

“This is awesome for my family,” said Jan Evans in victory lane. “We’ve been working hard all winter to get this car ready from last year. It’s just awesome for my family.

“Kasey Kleyn was doing really good. I was trying to keep up with him and the 55 got into him there. That was bad news for him there, but he was doing really good.”

While Garrett Evans has won nearly everything there is in the Northwest Super Late Model racing scene, the memorial event for his father has eluded him during the first eight runnings. On Saturday, Jan brought the trophy home for the family.

“My dad, he’s won a lot of races,” continued Jan Evans. “He can win them all if he’s in the right place at the right time, but we never got this one. I’m just happy for my family.”

Kleyn finished second, followed by Dave Garber, Jason Jefferson and Bob Presley.

The Northwest Super Late Model Series presented by RaceCals returns to action on May 18 at Stateline Speedway Stadium for the SLS 150. That event will be the first of three races in the state of Idaho during the 2024 season.
