The saying goes that "practice makes perfect," but Evan Roy proved on Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway that is not always the case.
Roy's attempts to practice ahead of Saturday's Mid-Coast Excavation Super Late Model feature were thwarted by issues with his race car. At one point, he wasn't even sure if he'd take part in Saturday's 50-lap feature race as part of Sabre Yacht Nights at the speedway.
Instead, he ended the night in victory lane, avoiding an early multi-car melee and taking the win.
Roy started seventh in the Super Late Model feature, but was one of the first cars unscathed after a pileup on lap three which started with contact between Steve Chicoine and Scott McDaniel as they battled for the lead.
From there, Roy jumped out front on the restart and led the rest of the way for the victory.
"First of all, congrats Cole [Robie] and Kate [Re]. I thought I was going to be starting and parking tonight. I didn't make it out for a single practice. The car wasn't running. Thanks to Carl Hinkson, Jay Cushman, my dad, they tore through this whole thing and got it figured out.
"It's hard-wired right now, so I actually had to stall the car to get it to shut off here. Oh my God, starting back there in seventh I wasn't even sure if it was going to run. We ended up winning the freaking thing."
Cole Robie finished second, one spot shy of his first career victory at Oxford Plains Speedway. However, the strong showing gives him confidence moving forward with the 2025 season.
"I mean, [Roy] had a great car. We missed it a little bit in the center. We'll come back next week, hopefully, and be a little bit better. We've got a good car.
"We had Kate on the bottom and we got really lucky. I think she hit the curb a little bit, messed up, and that's what made us hold on to second. If she didn't do that, I don't think we would have been able to hold on to it."
Kate Re rounded out the podium, giving her a pair of top-five finishes in the first two races of the Oxford Championship Series for 2025. She hopes to build on that momentum and return to victory lane later this year.
"I can't thank my guys enough at Port City Race Cars. They built me one fast car this winter, and I can't do it without them. We faded a little bit on, but we'll make some work up this season."
T.J. Brackett finished fourth, with Tom Abele, Jr. rounding out the top five.
Super Late Models return to Oxford Plains Speedway in a big way on Tuesday, May 27. The inaugural Memorial Day Clash 200 welcomes the PASS Super Late Model Series, as well as NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch and Brenden "Butterbean" Queen, for a mid-week showcase. Fans can watch that event live on RacingAmerica.TV.
