17-year-old Grant Thompson will compete for a championship in the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Series at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida this season. The Alabama native will race for WW Motorsports, a Pro Late Model team owned by legendary Florida racer William Wambles. Veteran Crew Chief Randy Armstrong, a long-time friend of the Thompson family, will lead the championship effort.

Thompson is looking forward to getting started. “I am very excited and thankful for this opportunity to drive the #00 PLM for William Wambles Motorsports,” Thompson said. “This is such a cool experience and such a great back story behind all of this action. My father grew up watching William race the All Pro Series. I have known him for a few years now. In the last year or so we have built up a great team and have put together a beautiful race car. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work again with one of the best crew chiefs in the Late-Model world, Randy Armstrong. Knowing how much knowledge Randy has gives me a boost of confidence in the way this car is going to handle.”

Wambles commented that if some additional sponsorship can be found, he’d like to run Grant in additional marquee events throughout the year. “Grant is an amazing young driver. We feel that he will compete and deliver on this opportunity to run for a championship in the Allen Turner Series. We are excited to have Randy (Armstrong) as our crew chief as well. Rogers Dabbs Chevrolet Performance Parts out of Brandon, Mississippi will be our primary sponsor for that series.”

“I’ve known both John and William since I was a little fella running around the Speedway in Mobile and I have a large amount of respect for both of them,” explains Armstrong. “I’m glad for the chance to work with Grant as I have a couple of times earlier in his career when he was racing go-karts and bandoleros. Grant is a very respectable young man and a very talented driver behind the wheel. I look at Grant and see a huge opportunity for a young man who is continuing to learn the sport every day and has a huge desire to win. I had some great teachers when I was young, and I am now in the position to pass that on and be the teacher for Grant.”

The first race of the Allen Turner Memorial Series is Friday, April 7. The rest of the series schedule includes events on June 16, August 25, September 23, and November 18, with the Snowflake 100 being the championship event on December 2.

Thompson is also competing in a pro truck this season and has won his first two races, with one win at Five Flags and the other coming at Houston Motorsports Park. “I am so thankful to my Dad and to everyone who works so hard to help me with my racing,” he said. “This season has the chance to be very special for our team, and without William, Randy, Rogers Dabbs Chevrolet Performance Parts, and all of my supporters, none of this would be possible.”
