Cole Butcher Claims Second Career Win in Redbud 400
Jul 27, 2025
Like father, like son - Dave Shullick, Jr. is a five-time winner of the Hy-Miler Nationals at Sandusky Speedway.
Shullick, Jr. claimed his fifth victory in the marquee Supermodified race, and his first since 2019, on Saturday night at Sandusky.
"I owe it all to the team," said Shullick, Jr. "We set out on this adventure to run a winged car a few years ago. A lot of people want to hate on this program, but we stuck with it. It's a brand-new car. Ran it last night for the first time and threw some stuff at it tonight that we thought we knew, and hit it right on the nose."
Shullick, Jr. joined his father as five-time winners of the Hy-Miler Nationals with Saturday's win. Dave Shullick won the inaugural Hy-Miler in 1978, beginning a family tradition that continues today.
"I just tried to run a smart race," said Shullick, Jr. "My dad won the first one. For me, potentially, to win the last one, and he's the only five-time winner until tonight. Five-time winners at the top, pretty special.
"Now I can retire," he joked. "I'm sure Chris [Osetek] doesn't want to hear that."
Just as it appeared Shullick, Jr. would cruise to the victory, the caution flag flew with four laps to go for an incident involving Jeff Abold on the frontstretch. However, Shullick, Jr. successfully held off Fast 40 winner Mike Lichty for the victory.
Along with the win in the inaugural event in 1978, Dave Shullick won the Hy-Miler Nationals in 1980, 1983, 1993 and 1999. Now, Dave Shullick, Jr. boasts Hy-Miler Nationals wins from 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2025.
Tyler Shullick finished third, with Mark Sammut and Johnny Benson rounding out the top five.
Mike Barnes led all but one of the first 66 laps of the race. However, Barnes fell out of the race from the lead with 34 laps to go, bringing out the caution. That set up the restart where Shullick, Jr. moved into the lead, jumping ahead of Mike Ordway.
The start of Saturday's Hy-Miler Nationals came much later than anticipated as rain brought a halt to proceedings following the ISMA/MSS Supermodified Series heat races. Barnes and Benson won the pair of 10-lap heat races.
