Seeking his 14th appearance in the Snowball Derby, the first driver to take his two timed laps on Friday night in qualifications will be Super Late Model veteran Mike Garvey.

The 1990 NASCAR All American Challenge champion was one of 51 drivers to clock in on Wednesday night to set the order for the most dramatic time trials format in the discipline. The session will take only the 30 fastest drivers with everyone else forced to race for four spots in Saturday’s last chance race.

The caveat is the two provisionals to the Southern Super Series and Blizzard Series full-timers highest in championship points from the 2021 season who didn’t make the field on speed.

As for Garvey, the first car out isn’t what he wanted as the track will likely be humid and damp, something that only improves as the session goes on.

"No, that's terrible," Garvey said of his fortune.

On the other hand, Pensacola racer Kyle Bryant will have his best chance to make his second Snowball Derby appearance in his ninth appearance as he will be the final driver to take his two timed laps. Casey Roderick and former pole sitter Preston Peltier will take their turns right before Bryant, and those could be the favorites for the pole.

Peltier especially set a would-be new track record during his test session if that inspires any confidence.

Many of the other obvious contenders are expected to turn their laps somewhere in the middle stages of the session when the track could be at its most humid worst -- as a visible film of dew tends to cover the track partway through the session.

Ty Majeski currently holds the track record with a 16.120 second lap in 2015 and the defending race winner goes out 11th on Friday. Erik Jones has two Tom Dawson Trophies and will go out just before that.

"We can work with that," Jones said.

Modified Tour champion and Cup Series regular Ryan Preece is looking to make his first start in the race since 2008 and should have a decent opportunity when he goes out 29th.

"It’s the most nerve-wracking part of the week," Preece said.
