It's not over until it's over, as Kyle Larson proved on Sunday in the Viva Mexico 250 at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Larson's chances for a win in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series event in Mexico City diminshed on lap eight, when he was tagged in a multi-car incident in the first turn of the 2.42-mile circuit. Larson finished 36th out of 37 cars, completing only 58 laps in the race.

However, Larson and the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 team repaired the car to get back on track and earn as many points as possible in the championship standings. That included an effort to utilize clean air without other cars around him on the circuit to set the Xfinity Fastest Lap of the race.

Larson clocked in at 93.782 seconds (92.896 mph) for the Xfinity Fastest Lap award for the race, during the final stage of the event. That marks the third time this season Larson has earned the Xfinity Fastest Lap Award.

Larson currently sits second in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, 67 points behind his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, William Byron.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series also made the trip to Mexico City for The Chilango 150. Ty Gibbs set the fastest lap of that race, with a time of 93.565 seconds (93.109 mph) around the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

While Gibbs will not earn a championship point in the NASCAR Xfinity Series standings as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series competitor, the No. 19 for Joe Gibbs Racing did earn the point in the owner's standings. It is the second time this season that Joe Gibbs Racing earned the Xfinity Fastest Lap award in the Xfinity Series, as Taylor Gray claimed the honor at Darlington.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returns to action this weekend at Pocono Raceway after a weekend off. They'll join the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup Series at Pocono Raceway.
