Legacy Motor Club to Join Toyota Racing in 2024
May 2, 2023
Jimmie Johnson, who secured a record-tying seven NASCAR Cup Series titles throughout his career, will be getting behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry in 2024, per David Wilson.
Wilson, the President of Toyota Racing Development, joined SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Wednesday, where he spilled the beans that Johnson would be joining the manufacturer as a driver in 2024.
"100 percent, yes. You will see [Johnson] in a Toyota," said Wilson. “That will be very moving and emotional for me personally, professionally, for Toyota. Now I’ll let Jimmie fill in the blank, but I will just say that Jimmie Johnson will be racing a Toyota Camry before he is done as a race car driver.”
In May, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB announced that they would be switching their two-car operation from Chevrolet to Toyota following the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Since making his NASCAR National Series debut in July 1998, Johnson has exclusively piloted a Chevrolet, doing so in all 783 of his NASCAR National Series starts.
After a two-year stint competing in the NTT IndyCar Series, Johnson has returned to part-time competition in the NASCAR Cup Series, running at COTA, as well as the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600.
In his three starts this season, Johnson has recorded a season-high finish of 31st in the Daytona 500, after three difficult events, all of which resulted in DNFs.
The 47-year-old driver is scheduled to return to competition in the NASCAR Cup Series for the inaugural Chicago Street Race, taking place on July 2.
