Race Results: NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165 at Chicago
Jul 6, 2025
For the second time in the last three years, the streets of Chicago, Illinois, officially belong to Shane Van Gisbergen.
The 36-year-old driver returned to Victory Lane in Sunday's Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course, bringing his No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing back to Victory Lane for the second time in 2025.
With intentions to run double-duty, competing in both the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series events, Van Gisbergen was the clear favorite to secure the victory in both events -- and that's exactly what he did.
After leading 27 of 75 laps, Van Gisbergen held off a hard-charging Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick to park his Trackhouse Racing machine in Victory Lane.
“Yeah, I love this place,” said Van Gisbergen. “What an amazing weekend for me. Lucky guy to drive some great cars. I thank Trackhouse, WeatherTech, Chevrolet, and all of these guys and girls here, what an amazing weekend.”
The Auckland, New Zealand-native had several challengers throughout the afternoon, including Michael McDowell, who got the lead from the outside pole and paced the field for the opening 31 laps.
McDowell, still searching for a victory to lock himself into the postseason, was looking like a legitimate contender until a mechanical issue forced Travis Peterson to call the No. 71 behind the wall.
From that point forward, Shane Van Gisbergen had control over the race and was able to maneuver himself through traffic in the late stages to retake the lead with 11 laps to go, setting him up to secure the win.
Ty Gibbs continued to show off his road course prowess and finished runner-up to Van Gisbergen on Sunday, matching a career-best result. Just behind him was Tyler Reddick, who pitted late for new tires and was flying through the pack in hopes of challenging for the victory.
After blowing an engine within seconds of the start of Saturday's NASCAR Cup Series practice and starting at the rear of the field, Denny Hamlin rebounded to finish in fourth place.
Kyle Busch finished fifth, collecting his second top-five result of 2025. AJ Allmendinger, Ryan Preece, Alex Bowman, NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Austin Hill, and Ross Chastain rounded out the top-10.
Leaving Chicago, William Byron (despite a last-place finish because of a first-lap mechanical issue) continues to hold a 13-point advantage over Chase Elliott in the NASCAR Cup Series regular-season point standings.
Next for the NASCAR Cup Series is a trip to Sonoma Raceway for the Toyota/Save Mart 350, the fourth road course event of the 2025 campaign. Coverage will be on TNT Sports on Sunday, July 13, at 3:30 pm ET.
