Mini Tyrrell walked away $50,000 richer after winning the Late Model Stock Car feature in Sunday night’s Throwback Classic for the zMAX CARS Tour presented by SoundGear from Hickory Motor Speedway.
After rain delayed the program a day, Tyrrell escaped a late race crash between Landen Lewis and Tristan McKee and held off Jared Fryar for his third CARS Late Model stock win of the season, and fourth of his career.
“I was just at the right place at the right time,” said Tyrrell. “I was in perfect position on the outside and just pedaled down and rolled on through it and somehow came out the leader,” said Tyrrell “It’s outstanding, dude. I’m so speechless, I feel like I’m out of words, I don’t have enough for it. I’m just on cloud nine, man.”
A crash in the last CARS Tour Late Model Stock outing at Caraway added to the season’s woes for the No. 81 team. Tyrrell was unsure of his future coming into Hickory, but the win Sunday night gives some new life to Tyrrell’s 2025 campaign.
“The car's in one piece, we’re fifty grand richer, and I mean, I think we’re going to the next one.”
With 10 laps to go, McKee and Lewis made contact battling for second, after Kaden Honeycutt gained the lead on the prior restart. That car triggered a multi-car crash in Turn 1 that forced race officials to throw the red flag.
“You’re racing for the win. You’re going for fifty thousand, going for a win in the CARS Tour. It’s not easy when you’re in that position, you gotta attack on it,” said Lewis “You gotta go when you get the opportunity and we were in the perfect spot to take the lead and that’s what needed to do and he (McKee) wants to right rear hook me. It’s super unacceptable.”
Tristan McKee declined to comment on the incident.
zMAX CARS Tour officials also ruled Honeycutt had jumped the prior restart, sending him to the rear of the field. This promoted Tyrrell to the lead for the final battle for the $50,000.
Jared Fryar finished second, with Conner Jones, after advancing through the LCQ, rounding out the podium.
After completing the first 44 laps on Saturday, rain halted the Pro Late Model race. When the race resumed on Sunday, Kaden Honeycutt was sent to the rear for unapproved adjustments. Spencer Davis inherited the lead and controlled the final 56 laps, holding off a hard-charging Luke Baldwin late.
“We all work so hard, man,” said Davis “To get the call to drive that No. 96 car and to know that like it’s at my reigns, I get to mold their program to what I want, to bring some of my guys on and just come here, this is win number four for the year myself, win number five for the program, dude it’s just unbelievable.”
Baldwin closed down on Davis, making contact with the No. 96 and even clearing for the lead on the final lap, but a cross-over move by Davis set up a photo finish with Baldwin’s No. 51, coming up just a bumper shy of $30,000.
“It’s unfortunate that I got maybe a little impatient and forced a mistake there with about six to go,” said Baldwin. “I tried to back out and let us both get rolling and get to racing again and do it the right way, and I did and got raced the way we did, it’s frustrating.”
The Rick Ware Racing No. 51 retains the points lead in the owners' standings for the Pro Late Model Division.
