Johnny Clark tied Ben Rowe atop the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model career wins list on Saturday night, earning his second consecutive victory with the series at White Mountain Motorsports Park.
Clark's victory was the 52nd of his PASS Super Late Model career, as the seven-time PASS North champion added to his prolific resume.
D.J. Shaw gained control of the race just past the 100-lap mark, and moments before the caution flew for an incident involving Gabe Brown and Jimmy Hebert. Hebert led from lap 45 to lap 104, before losing the top spot to Shaw and colliding with Brown.
On lap 119, the caution flag flew for separate incidents involving Mike Scorzelli and Pat Corbett. Shaw maintained the lead on the restart, while Clark passed Joey Doiron for second. However, the caution flew again just a few laps later, as J.P. Josiasse spun in turn four.
That allowed Clark to restart alongside Shaw, where he gained the upper hand and took the lead on lap 125. Shaw kept within striking distance, but Clark maintained the top spot all the way to his 52nd PASS checkered flag.
Despite some early struggles that saw Clark fall as far back as 12th in the field, Clark persevered and showed the determination that has made him one of the best in the series.
"I didn't panic," said Clark in victory lane. "The track wasn't acting right. We practiced and we were good, and then we weren't. We put the thing back exactly how we've won a lot of races here. We just had to wait for the track to come around. Boy, it feels really good when it starts coming around with 30, 40 to go."
With back-to-back wins in the past two weeks at White Mountain Motorsports Park as PASS has worked tirelessly to make up multiple events rained out during a tumultuous spring, Clark is heating up just in time for PASS 400 weekend at Oxford Plains Speedway. He'll go into that weekend tied atop the wins list with another series legend.
"That's good when it's Ben Rowe," said Clark. "It's been awesome the last two weeks here to come back to White Mountain. It's exactly what we needed. We needed some good runs here. We had a really tough middle part of the season, a rough 250. This feels so good."
D.J. Shaw settled for a runner-up finish, understandably frustrated with the late-race spree of cautions that diminished his shot at a win.
"Just an inopportune caution there at the end," said Shaw. "I thought we were in the driver's seat there, but it just wasn't meant to be today. All in all, you can't complain about how this car performed. We just repaired it from Star there a few weeks back. It was stout tonight. It just wasn't good enough at the last restart there on the bottom."
Despite his frustration with the situation, Shaw made sure to race Clark cleanly and with respect, especially while battling Clark for the PASS championship. Shaw entered the night leading Clark by 11 points.
"Wanted to race Johnny clean," said Shaw. "Racing for a championship here and respect the hell out of him, and he races me with a ton of respect. Hope we put on a good show for the fans and just want to thank Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, Bar Harbor Wealth Management, everyone that gets us here."
Joey Doiron finished third, fighting a tight race car throughout the 150-lap feature at White Mountain.
"We were just too tight again. We were better than last week, but we need to get better here. I don't know why, but the last couple of years, I haven't been that good."
Austin Teras finished fourth, with Trevor Sanborn rounding out the top five.
A huge weekend awaits PASS competitors on October 17-19 at Oxford Plains Speedway. The series will make up the Kennebec Equipment Rentals 150 on Friday, October 17 before turning its focus to the PASS 400 on Sunday, October 19.
Not only will the championship battle be decided for the PASS Super Late Models, but a massive purse awaits competitors, with three segments each paying $25,000 to win, along with a $25,000 for the driver with the best performance across all three segments. It is possible for a driver to walk away from the PASS 400 with a $100,000 payday.
