Matt Hirschman Captures Third Victory in Maynard Troyer Classic VI
Aug 30, 2025
After a dramatic battle with Kyle Steckly in the final laps, Jake Sheridan scored his second APC United Late Model Series victory of 2025 on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Sheridan and Steckly battled side-by-side multiple times over the closing laps of the event. Steckly took the lead with five laps to go, but Sheridan rallied to reclaim the top spot on the final lap after contact in turn one.
After their fierce battle for the win, Sheridan had plenty of praise for the two-time series champion.
"I'll tell everybody right now that Kyle Steckly is a really great race car driver," said Sheridan. "He ran me really clean and did exactly what he's supposed to do. He rubbed a little bit side-by-side. I know he doesn't want to get moved out of the way, but I know he would do the same.
"These APC races, to me, are a huge deal. I don't get to go down Snowball time like him. This is a huge deal for me and a highlight of my career. He's a great race car driver. A great save there, and my only chance there was to come down on entry. I was so tight in the middle. I think we did a really, really good job of saving the right-rear the first half of the race. That's really the only chance I had at the end."
Meanwhile, Steckly was miffed with the way Sheridan raced him in the final lap of the event.
"It's frustrating to put in all that work," said Steckly. "First of all, my guys and Jordan House did an absolutely amazing job today. They gave me, by far, the best car I've ever had here, so big shoutout to Port City Racecars, 22 Racing and MBS Motorsports for giving me a pretty busy weekend.
"It was a lot of fun coming through the field there. Jake was running the top good. I was trying to race him as cleanly as I could. I felt I got around him prety cleanly and then just, you know, his girlfriend had to block me for a couple of laps and then I got drive through. That's the way racing goes. We'll take the second place over Josh Stade and move on to Delaware."
Moving on to Delaware is critical for both Steckly and Josh Stade, who finished third at Sunset. Following the Stewarts & Kubota 150 at Sunset, Stade leads Steckly by five points in the APC United Late Model Series championship standings. Sheridan's win puts him just 10 points behind Stade in third.
That championship battle will be decided at Delaware Speedway on Saturday, September 27 in the season finale, the Castrol Great Canadian 300. Stade had frustrations of his own about the racing at Sunset, but is pleased to still have a car in one piece heading into the dramatic finale.
"I got punted from behind on the one restart where I had to check up there or I would have gotten into Chenoweth in front of me," said Stade. "Then I got used up three-wide. It is what it is.
"We got a shot when we go back to Delaware. That's all you can ask for this little volunteer team that we've got here. I'm just happy to be here. Good podium finish, car's in decent shape and hopefully we can get a little bit of luck when we go to Delaware."
Shae Gemmell finished fourth, with Ray Morneau rounding out the top five.
