With a strong on-track performance during the Kulwicki Driver Development Program’s second segment, Derek Gluchacki took the lead in the standings of the only driver development program that gives scholarships to its participants.
The Massachusetts native, who was the runner-up in the program last year, won two feature races and a heat event, and placed third in another. In an American-Canadian Tour race at Seekonk (Mass.) Speedway, Gluchacki won a heat race and the feature after starting seventh. He also started seventh at New London-Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, Conn., and won that event. In the ACT 250 at White Mountain Motorsports Park in Woodstock, N.H., he started 14th and finished third after a quick pit stop allowed him to pass nine cars on pit road.
In addition to continuing his crew chief/car setup business, Gluchacki spearheaded several community projects.
This year, members of Alan Kulwicki’s 1992 NASCAR Cup championship team are mentoring the five “Underbirds.” Gluchacki’s mentor is Peter Jellen.
