Throwback Thursday? How about a Florida Flashback to start your Thursday? Here is a look in the Speedweeks record books from February 17.
1972 - Curt Hansen picked up a victory in the Dirt Track Classic at DeLand Drive-In Raceway. Hansen’s win was one of the three races run in 1972. The three-eighths of a mile track closed in 1973 and the two year series is just a page in history. Hansen was the three race champion in 1972 with Darrell Drake being the champion in 1971.
1984 - The popular NASCAR Dash Series kicked off the 1984 season with Mike Swaim winning the Florida 200. This was his first of three straight wins at Daytona. He would add a fourth win in 1994. On this day in 1984, Swaim beat Danny McClain and a young Davey Allison who was the last car on the lead lap in third.
THE THIRD TURN: 1984 Florida 200
1996 - Rick Fuller wins the week ending Richie Evans Memorial 100 at New Smyrna Speedway. Fuller had three wins during the week and came up eight points short because of one off night. Tom Baldwin was able to win the week-long championship despite no wins. Baldwin had an average finish of 3.89 for the week. Baldwin was a four-time World Series champion at New Smyrna.
THE THIRD TURN: World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing - February 17, 1996
2018 - Harrison Burton wins for the third time during the week at New Smyrna Speedway in the 100-lap finale. Burton had seven poles that week and would have won the title if not for an 18th-place finish in the middle of the week. Stephen Nasse was able to lock down his first Super Late Model title with two wins and seven top five runs.
THE THIRD TURN: World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing - February 17, 2018
