Oxford 250 winner Austin Teras picked up another checkered flag at Oxford Plains Speedway on Friday night, scoring the victory in the Kennebec Equipment Rental 150 to kick off Spencer Group Paving PASS 400 weekend.
Teras outdueled Brandon Barker to win Friday's 150-lap Super Late Model feature, once again putting the competition on notice that he will be one to watch in another marquee event at the Maine bullring.
Barker led the first 95 laps of the race before Teras moved into the top spot. Barker reclaimed the lead on a lap 115 restart, but Teras battled back into the lead on lap 122 and moved on to the win.
"I was actually surprised at how good Brandon was on the top there," said Teras in victory lane. He made me work awfully hard for it. I like coming here. We've been working on this car. It was a new car this year, and it's getting better. Now, we get to go into a huge, huge weekend here."
While Teras celebrated his win, a frustrated Barker lamented losing so many laps and coming up one spot short.
"It was a good run, yeah," said Barker. "Leading all the laps and then losing kind of sucks. Congrats to Austin, Jay. Everybody at Landshark, Kyle, Mickey, Eric. Those guys are awesome, and it shows."
Johnny Clark entered the final lap running fifth, but finished third after Gabe Brown and Max Cookson came together on the backstretch while battling for the final step on the podium. By finishing one spot ahead of D.J. Shaw, Clark closed unofficially to within five points of Shaw in the battle for the PASS North championship, which will be decided in Sunday's PASS 400.
Sunday's race boasts the potential for a $100,000 payday, with each of three segments paying $25,000 to win alongside a total event purse offering $25,000 to the driver with the best cumulative score on the day.
Clark was puzzled by the frenetic nature of Friday's race, knowing what is on the line for everyone on Sunday. Still, he left content with a third-place finish, knowing what needs to be done to improve for the finale.
"I should have been sitting where Max was when he wrecked, but I guess I'm glad I wasn't. I felt like we had a third-place car. Man, just so many cautions there at the beginning of the race. I'm confused. Does tonight pay 100 grand? It seems like it was pretty crazy there for a little bit.
"We're a little better, but we need to be just a little bit more. I felt like we had a third-place car and we finished third, so it's a good day."
Preparations for Sunday's PASS 400 begin on Saturday, with qualifying races to determine the field and starting lineup for 400 laps of Super Late Model competition on Sunday.
Saturday's action at Oxford Plains Speedway also includes the Pine Tree State 125, as the Milton CAT American-Canadian Tour follows a championship battle of its own in the final month of its season.
