After one year away, Sportsman Modified competitors from the Northeastern United States return to Lake View Motor Speedway this weekend for the I-95 South of the Border Cash Money Showdown.

The event started in 2021, as Lake View Motor Speedway owner Scott Tripp had a vision to bring the Sportsman Modified competitors to his track in Nichols, South Carolina when many of those teams would be headed south to Florida to start the racing season. Originally from New York, Tripp organized an event that drew more than 30 cars to Lake View.

The first year saw two nights of racing. Nick Guerreri held off brothers Justin and Andrew Buff and local favorite Willie Milliken for the win on the first night. Andrew Buff took the win on night number two, with Guerreri finishing second and Justin Buff taking the third spot.

The 2022 edition saw one more night of racing added to the schedule, with plans to compete on Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the first weekend of February. Andrew Buff picked up where he left off in the second trip to Lake View, scoring the feature win on Thursday in a Buff brother sweep of the top two spots.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature intervened and Friday's racing program was canceled due to persistent rainfall. When racing resumed on Saturday, Zach Sobotka scored the victory ahead of Chris Johnson and Joe Toth.

The Sportsman Modifieds were scheduled for a return in 2023, alongside the Short Track Super Series Big-Block Modifieids' highly anticipated debut at the 4/10-mile facility. Unfortunately, that event was also rained out, leading to a year off for the South of the Border Showdown.

The event returns for 2024, with the Sportsman Modifieds returning to the spotlight. They will be joined by Lake View's Late Models and Stock V8s on Sunday, February 4.

Those unable to attend the event can watch live on RacingAmerica.tv. All it takes is a subscription to watch Sunday's broadcast, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
